Paint Live. Online Workshops. Zoom Classes.
Strange times call for strange adaptations. I never in a million years would have thought of doing an online, not a recording, a live art class. I made peace with the fact that I wouldn’t be able to run any classes for a while. I expected two maybe three months of social distancing but it has proving much worse. A lot of people started doing online activities. I could see how it still works for book groups or exercise classes. Then I also saw couple of artists do lives but I still couldn’t see how I could do it. They were demonstrating rather than teaching. For me art is about connecting with people, it cannot be a one-way process. I want people to paint along.
Finally inspiration stuck. I decided my first live would be a tribute to my first art teacher, the late Sachin Naik a fabulous watercolour artist from Pune, India. I used one of his paintings as inspiration. Spent a day trying to set-up for the live. I resolved my biggest challenge by using an easel. Bit difficult to paint standing sideways but it’s the only way I can paint and interact with my audience on Zoom and Instagram. It worked and it was fun. There is always that time when it goes all quiet as people are absorbed in painting. I just did a second workshop yesterday and the feedback is heart-warming.
These are the paintings that my online classes have been recreating.
